Note: This Article assumes that the readers are up to date with Boruto: Naruto Next Generations and contains spoilers from episode 31, please watch it before reading this article.
In the last episode of the Kirigakure arc we see that Karatachi Kagura unable to kill Uzumaki Boruto because friendship! Hoshigaki Shizuma, the leader of the Blood Mist movement decides to fight Boruto off with the stolen Samehada at which point Mitsuki jumps in and reveals that Shizuma was the one behind the assassinations he accused Chojurou the Rokudaime Mizukage of to spark a civil war in Kiri. Shizuma then proceeds to fight Boruto and Mitsuki and after an action packed sequence Boruto knocks Shizuma into a rock with the Boruto Stream combo (like father like son, eh?)

Shizuma gets up only to be absorbed by the Samehada and transform into some human-shark mutant. At this point Chojuro jumps in and asks Kagura for the Hiramekarei but Kagura asks his permission to take care of Shizuma himself which is granted. Kagura pours in some chakra into the Hiramekarei and holds his own against Shizuma but gets exhausted.
This is when Boruto chips in and the series gets one of its most bromantic combos:

Wonder how that looks in 720p? Anyway going through the sequence again I realized something:

Boruto's right eye seems to glow while his sclera seems a bit grayish similar to though not same as Jougan which has a black sclera though that could be because it's on the verge of awakening. Here a closer look:

It's possible that the light from Hiramekarei was reflected off Boruto's right eye but the same didn't happen to Kagura. Also, Boruto was holding the sword from the left so shouldn't the left eye be glowing if it's a reflection? It should also be noted that Boruto and Kagura managed to separate Samehada from Shizuma without ripping his arm or any other permanent damage.

This could be a special trait of the mysterious doujutsu or maybe the Hiramekarei itself whose origins like the other six swords are still relatively unknown. It's possible that being in contact with the sword itself was the catalyst to activate the doujutsu.
The last time we saw the Jougan was during the Chimera arc, after which it disappeared. All we know about it are that it has the ability to detect negative emotions and inter-dimensional beings.
So what do you guys think? Did Boruto activate the Jougan? Or was it an animation error? Please share your thoughts below.
hmm.......i dnt believe the sword had anything to do with it
ReplyDeleteThe jougan might be Activated but not due to sword.
ReplyDeleteMaybe, but the jougan definitely reacted to something, either the Samehada hybrid or the power surge from the Hirkemerai. In all the instances we see Jougan it activates in reaction to something, usually inter-dimensional beings like Nue and the Otsutsuki, never Boruto activating it willingly, except on the first episode when he's fighting Kawaki. We also don't know much about the swords' origins just that they are legendary.
