Reasons To Not Sleep On Gundam Build Divers Re:RISE

(Screenshot From Youtube)

Gundam Build Divers may have disappointed you but that's no reason to sleep on its sequel. Gundam Build Divers Re:Rise might just be what the Build series needed to create the interest. It may not live up to the Build Fighters but is enjoyable in its own right. Even though it's been a year since season one was completed, and season 2 is out now, I'll try to explain why this series is worth a watch without giving away any spoilers.

Theme

The series starts with Hiroto, May, Kazami and Parviz receiving a mission in GBN (the in-anime VRMMORPG) from a furry character named Freddie to protect his furry village from mechs called One-Eyes.

Even though the series focuses on the 'mission', it radiates with a touch of hurt and comfort. Every person in the series seems to be hurting in their own way and are trying to get through their daily lives while dealing with it. But the series has many funny and upbeat moments, so it never gets heavy.

The series sort of has an Isekai touch to it, which might be a plus point if you like the genre or a minus if you're frustrated with it.

Strong Mob

This might honestly put some people off but after seeing every Gundam trounce every generic model, it's refreshing to see the protagonists struggle with the mob. It adds to the tension because if every grunt can hold their own against the protagonists, just how strong must the main villain be?  And boy is the main villain crazy strong. Of course, the team grows strong but so do the grunts.

Mystery

The series is jam-packed with mysteries. Almost everyone and everything has some backstory to it that unravels with time. You learn something new about the characters, Eldora and the villains. The show even unravels mysteries you didn't know were there.

Character Development

At the start of the series, every character seems like your average archetype: Hiroto the sour stoic genius, May the stoic probably secret detective, Kazami the wannabe and Parviz the nervous kid. But with time, you realize that there's more to them beneath the surface. Each of them has a reason why they behave the way they do and as they interact with Eldorians and fight battles, they grow. The side cast also has some memorable characters that add an interesting dynamic to the story.

Camaraderie Over Friendship

A major complaint that otakus had with Gundam Build Divers was its Nakama power. Here, there's more emphasis on camaraderie than friendship. To put it simply, the way Build DiVERS interact with each other is kinda the way people interact with their teammates rather than their friends. They are there to help each other out but don't share every problem with each other. In fact, we as viewers probably know more about each teammate than they know about each other. And I don't know about you guys, but that's sort of how I interact with my online friends.

Overall, I'd like to say that Gundam Buil Divers Re:Rise is a good series worth a watch if not worth fawning over. Of course, you don't have to share my opinions about the show. Do tell, what do you think about it? If you decide to watch it, the show will go on a brief hiatus after the 5th episode of season 2 due to the pandemic, but all episodes of season one are available on GundamInfo's official Youtube channel.
